  Foresight: instructions for authors
... forensic insights for litigation lawyers

If you wish to submit an article for consideration for publication in Foresight, please follow these instructions carefully to ensure it is dealt with speedily. Intending authors are advised to consult with the editor before preparing articles for submission. We do not pay authors.

Publishing licence
All articles published in Foresight must be covered by our Publishing Licence

Editorial policy
Foresight publishes original articles on any aspect of expert evidence, drawn from any discipline, directed to a legal readership. This journal does not aim to preach to lawyers on the ways they could improve their relationships with experts. Rather, articles will be accepted if they seek to educate the legal profession on new aspects of a discipline that could affect the way the lawyer proceeds with a case or frames a letter of instruction. For example:

  1. In what ways could a lipreader help with a case where CCTV footage is available of an assault?
  2. What important new evidence has come to light recently on the symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome?
  3. If a lawyer has a fractured piece of metal, e.g. a rung from a ladder, what non-destructive tests can be performed to analyse the reasons for the fracture?

The publisher retains full editorial control and reserves the right to edit submissions to conform to the style of the journal. No article will be published without the author signing off the final proof, which will incorporate any editorial changes.

The publisher has sole control over the position of the article within the publication and the placing of adverts in relation to that article. In addition, the publisher may defer publication of an article to achieve a better mix of subject matter in a given issue.

Typescripts
Papers are expected to be no more than 1,600 words in length, unless otherwise agreed or invited by the editor. There is no page charge. All papers accepted become copyright of J S Publications.

Submission
Submitted articles must be accompanied by the following signed declarations:

  • that the work as submitted has not been published previously or accepted for publication, nor is it being considered for publication elsewhere, either in whole or substantial part.
  • that all authors have read the submitted version of the manuscript and approve its submission.
  • that all persons entitled to authorship have been so included.

Manuscripts must be in English and spelling should conform to the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English. The editor reserves the right to modify manuscripts that do not conform to scientific, technical, stylistic or grammatical standards, and minor alterations of this nature will normally be seen by authors only at the proof stage.

All manuscripts must be submitted by e-mail to foresight@jspubs.com. Please note the software used, the type of computer and any special (non-keyboard) characters used. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph, and turn the hyphenation off.

Revision
All submissions are subject to editorial review. If a manuscript is returned for revision, the correspondence author should carry out the revision within 6 weeks.

Handling the proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:

www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proofs. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.

Alterations in the text, other than printer’s errors, may be charged to the author. Proofs must be returned by first-class mail within 3 days of receipt to:

Overseas contributors might consider nominating someone in the UK to correct their proofs for them; they should do this when submitting their revised manuscript. The editor reserves the right to correct the proofs, using the accepted version of the manuscript, if the author’s corrections are overdue and publication would otherwise be delayed.

Specifications

Figures and photographs
Artwork (including photographs) must be submitted in electronic form, together with the hard copy of the lettered figure (use Times New Roman font for the lettering if possible). Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in JPEG format (minimum 300 dpi). If you have any additional images that you feel may be appropriate to place around your article, please send them as JPEG or TIFF files along with your article for our consideration.

Figure legends
Legends should be grouped on a separate page of your submission. Furnish enough detail so that the figure can be understood without reference to the text. In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure.

Tables
Each table should be on a separate page of your submission, numbered and accompanied by a title at the top.

Portrait photograph
A colour portrait photograph of the lead author should be submitted in electronic form (JPEG or TIFF format, 425 x 425 pixels @ 300 dpi).
