Our Vetting Process

From its beginnings in 1988, the UK Register of Expert Witnesses has objectively checked the witness part of the expert witness equation for all applicants opting for a vetted listing. You can read all about our vetting system, but in brief:

  1. On receipt of an application, we take up references from instructing solicitors and/or barristers. We ask for an opinion as to their satisfaction with the expert concerned and whether they feel able to make a recommendation to the legal profession in general about the expert.
  2. If a positive recommendation is forthcoming, the expert witness can be listed in the UK Register of Expert Witnesses as vetted.

Offering outstanding value for money

Our three ‘service’ levels are Classic, Classic Plus and Professional. Whichever you choose, you will receive excellent value for money and benefit from our unique commitment to the expert witness community. See the table below for a quick reference.

Controlled distribution

The printed version of the UK Register of Expert Witnesses is available free to that segment of the legal profession which accounts for 80% of its total income and undertakes almost all its litigation work (just under 6,000 UK firms, including barristers, law libraries and trading standards offices). Insurers and corporate lawyers, amongst others, may also purchase it. The Register is not sold direct to the public.

  • HM Coroners Office
  • Law Society of Northern Ireland
  • BBC
  • National Education Union
  • Trading Standards Offices

Publication cycle

The printed book is published annually at the end of April, with administrative preparations beginning in January and ending early in March. The software is made available at the end of April, to coincide with the printing of the book. Software can be updated via the internet on a regular basis. The ease and flexibility of web publishing means that our Web Register is updated daily.

The sooner an application is returned, the sooner the vetting procedure can be completed and an expert’s details included in our in-house and on-line searches.
